Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondlitis)

Tennis elbow is the number one reason people see their doctor for elbow pain. It is considered a cumulative trauma injury that occurs over time from repeated use of the muscles of the arm and forearm that lead to small tears of the tendons.

In racket sports, intense gripping can lead to tennis elbow. Other factors that contribute to tennis elbow include lack of strength, poor technique, improper equipment or increases in time or intensity of play. In tennis, a common cause is a racquet’s inappropriate string tension and grip circumference.

Sometimes the pain and inflammation of the tendon is caused by a direct injury or impact. Ocassionally, the muscles may partially tear.

Symptoms

Pain on the outside of the elbow, usually during or after intense use, is the first sign of tennis elbow. In some cases, lifting or grasping objects may be difficult. Some people have pain that radiates down the arm.
